Welcome to Solvay Fire Department Inc.

Welcome
    Welcome to the Solvay Fire Department; our organization was founded in 1895 as a village fire department and we became incorporated in 1998. We are a department with dedicated members just like you,from the neighborhoods of our fire district. The department is built on steep traditions and family bonds. We currently respond to fire and rescue calls from two fire stations located in the heart of our fire district. Station One located at 1925 Milton Ave close to the industries in our district and Station Two located at 1100 Cogswell Ave in a traditional neighborhood of our district.

On Thursday, December 1st at 17:52hrs OC 911 alerted Solvay for a vehicle on fire, reported to be 15 feet from a structure. Engine 12 and Car 1 (Woodworth) checked out immediately after dispatch, with Car 1 arriving to find a fully involved engine compartment, about 20 feet from the residence. Engine 12 stretched a line and quickly extinguished the blaze. Engine 21 arrived shortly thereafter assisting the Station 1 crew. Due to a quick knock down, most of the owner’s belongings in the vehicle were saved.   Past Chief Bosco was in the area and filmed the operation. Crews cleared in about 20 minutes. Units assigned: Car 1, Car 2 (Cantello), Car 3 (Spaeth), Car 400 (Ryan), Engine 12, and Engine 21.

 
Solvay Welcomes our First Student Bunk-in Class!

Solvay welcomes the 2011 Student Bunk-in Class! We are proud to have Julien Farges (Shandaken-Allaben Hose Co. Shandaken, NY - http://shandakenfd.webs.com/) and Joe Malmquist (Cincinnatus Fire Department, Cincinnatus, NY) bunking at Station 1 for the school year. Both Julien and Joe are majoring in Fire Protection Technology at Onondaga Community College. Julien and Joe underwent a rigorous 1 week recruit academy held jointly by Solvay and the Taunton Fire Department. The Solvay and Taunton bunkers completed over 50 hours of training in just 5 days the week before classes began.   Julien and Joe are the first student bunk-ins in the Solvay Fire Department. 

 
   
   
Solvay Takes Delivery of New Extrication Tools

On Wednesday August 17, 2011 Solvay took delivery of new extrication tools for both Engine 21 and Rescue 11, and Rescue 11 also received a new set of air bags.  The extrication tools are replacing dated tools that do not have the ability to efficiently extricate a patient from some of the newer automobiles.   The extrication tools are an assortment of Amkus cutters and spreaders, as well as two new dual-simo hydraulic pumps.  Rescue 11’s new air bags are Paratech, which complement the existing Paratech air bags on Engine 21, and replace Rescue 11’s Vetter bag system.




 
Signal 80 - State Fair Blvd/Willis Ave - Geddes

On Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 11:28hrs Station 1 units were dispatched to a signal 80 involving a concrete truck. Station 2 Lt Veri was in the area, arrived shortly before Car 3 (Spaeth) to find an unconscious female in the vehicle. Car 3 immediately advised heavy extrication would be required. Rescue 11 advised OCFC to activate Station 2 for Engine 21 and their extrication tools. Engine 21 arrived assisting in the extrication. Squads 21 and 12 also responded for additional manpower. Lakeside Engine 3 and Car 1 (Kolakowski) were specialed in for manpower, assisting in vehicle hazards. Pt was extricated and loaded into the Rural Metro ambulance roughly 22 minutes from the time of dispatch. Media Coverage:

On Sunday, June 12, 2011 Engine 21 was alerted to respond to a fully involved residence at the Floral Trailer Park in Lakeside. Rescue 11 was staffed with 7 volunteers took in the RIT assignment in place of Engine 21 immediately after dispatch. Car 4 (M. Zingaro)checked enroute shortly after Rescue 11. Lakeside Car 2 (Gosson) arrived reporting a Signal 99. Rescue 11 arrived, handling RIT. Rescue 11 cleared in about 90 minutes. Units assigned Solvay Rescue 11, Car 4, Lakeside Engine 3, Ladder 1, Car 2, Car 3 (Wosely), Baldwinsville Engine 1, Ladder 2, Engine 5, Liverpool Engine 3, Car 4 (Loucks), Fairmount Engine 6, Warners Engine 3.

 
Signal 99 - 5292 Abbe Dr - Taunton Fire District

On Firday, June 3, 2011 at 14:51hrs while Car 3 (Spaeth) Rescue 11 and Squad 21 were working a traumatic arrest OCFC dropped the box for 5292 Abbe Dr, Taunton Fire District. Engine 22 was alerted to respond from Solvay. Engine 6 out of Taunton arrived seconds after dispatch reporting a wood frame dwelling with an attached garage well off, involving the house, calling a Signal 99. Taunton Ladder 5 arrived shortly thereafter with Lieutenant Phelan assuming command. While Taunton Car 1 (Rudiger) arrived taking command, 2 lines were making great progress in the house. Engine 22's crew assisted with overhaul while Fairmount opened the roof. Solvay Car 400 (Ryan) took safety, Solvay Car 3 went in and out to assist 22. Engine 22 cleared in about 90 minutes. Units assigned - Solvay Engine 22, Car 3, and Car 400, Taunton Ladder 5, Engine 6, Rescue 3, Car 1, Car 3 (Sparks)(Operations), Car 500 (Sauer), Onondaga Hill Engine 3, Car 1 (Flynn), Car 3 (Okoniewski), Fairmount Truck 1, Car 1 (Mallore), Howlett Hill Engine 6, South Onondaga Engine 6, A Camillus Engine, and Marcellus Rescue 1.

Solvay Awarded Rural Metro EMSupport Grant

On Thursday, March 3, 2011 Rural Metro Supervisor and Solvay Social member Anthony Giachetti presented the Solvay Fire Department with a $500 grant to help replace our aging Lifepack 500 defibrillators.  The grant is part of Rural Metro's ongoing commitment to the community and its partners.  The grant was written by Solvay Grant Writer and Firefighter Eric Lee.  This is the second EMSupport Grant awarded to Solvay in the last 2 years.  Rural Metro started the EMSupport Grants in 2010, for more information visit http://www.ruralmetrosyracuse.com/EMSupportGrant.html.  Eric's continuous and vigilant grant work is greatly appreciated by all.  Thanks to both Rural Metro and Eric Lee!

On Tuesday, January 25, 2010 at 11:45hrs Engine 21 was alerted to respond as the R.I.T. to a Signal 99 in the Howlett Hill Fire District.  7 minutes earlier Howlett Hill, Onondaga Hill, Fairmount and Marcellus were alerted for the fire, arriving to find a large 2 story home with heavy fire showing.  Engine 21 responded, provided R.I.T. services and also assisted in overhaul.  Howlett Hill 94 had a good knock on the fire, while Fairmount cut the roof.  Fire was under control in about 30 minutes.  Engine 21 cleared in about 2 hours.  Mutual aid was also provided by Taunton Rescue 3, Sentinel Heights ("The Heights") Engine 93, South Onondaga Engine 6, and Marcellus Ambulance.  The OC Fire Investigation Unit is looking into the cause of the fire.
