Why Us?

You Reside Within Our Fire District

One reason you may choose Solvay could be that you live within a community we protect. Many of the men and women that volunteer with our organization live in an area that we serve. If you live in the Village of Solvay or Town of Geddes, this may be you. What better way to give back to your community than to be its first line of defense against fire, rescue, or medical emergencies. Nonetheless, if you do not live in our fire district you can still apply. Some of our members live in surrounding communities including Fairmount, Town of Onondaga, Lakeland, and even the City of Syracuse. Return to the Recruitment Center to learn more on how to apply.

A Unique Fire District

The Solvay Fire Department protects one of the most diverse fire districts in Onondaga County, NY. Bordering the western portion of the City of Syracuse you will find every thing from commercial, residential, and industrial types of structures. It doesn't end there. Within each category are different eras of building construction. The old village is mainly balloon frame multi-family apartments, as Westvale contains many single family homes built during the 1940s all the way up to newer lightweight construction off of West Genesee St. towards Fairmount. There are multiple commercial areas scattered along West Genesee St. and throughout Western Lights. The industry ranges from Crucible Steel and RockTenn to Frazier & jones on Milton Avenue. Portions of I-690 and Rt. 695 run through our district bringing in numerous vehicle accidents each year. On top of all this major railroad companies transport goods and passengers through our district daily. Although it is undergoing major restoration by the Honeywell Corporation, Onondaga Lake's western shores are protected by our department. Did we mention that the entire New York State Fairgrounds lies within our first due. In 2015, construction of the Lakeview Ampitheater was completed in our fire district. To learn more about that part of our department click on the station 4 patch in the top right corner of the page. If you're looking for the potential to respond to many different types of emergencies, Solvay is the place to be.

A Family Like None Other

Firefighters are known everywhere to have an excellent bond of camaraderie or brotherhood. It begins from day one when you show up at the firehouse and only builds to become stronger everyday, every training, and every call you respond to with fellow firefighters. The people you meet at the station don't just become friends but rather a second family. Here at Solvay, our firefighters don't just train and respond to emergencies together, in their down time at the station they hang out, eat, and play together. Outside of the station firefighters go out together and help each other out when they need it. The relationships you make here will last forever and are stronger than most. We encourage you to take the initiative to stop by and get a better look at our family. An officer or firefighter would be more than happy to answer any questions, give a tour, and give you an application for membership.
