FATAL SIGNAL 80 - NB RT. 695 to WB I-690

Solvay Rescue 11 responded with Lakeside and Fairmount.

Update: Two people were killed and two others were injured after a crash on Interstate 690 West in Geddes, police said.

Shortly after 2 a.m., a four-door Chevrolet Lumina went off the right side of the highway and struck a light pole, Geddes police Sgt. Bob Czaplicki said.

"The car wrapped around the pole, literally," Czaplicki said.

A woman driving the car and a man sitting in the front passenger's seat were pronounced dead at the scene, Czaplicki said.

Firefighters extricated two women from the backseat and ambulances took them to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, the sergeant said. The two women are expected to survive, Czaplicki said.

Everyone in the car was wearing a seat belt, he said.

The accident happened on I-690 West, alongside the construction site of the new amphitheater.

The northbound I-695 ramp heading to I-690 West is expected to remain closed until about 6:30 a.m., but should reopen before the morning rush hour traffic, Czaplicki said.

The Onondaga County sheriff's accident reconstruction team is assisting with the investigation.

Geddes police said they think the car may have been traveling faster than the posted 65 mph speed limit, although the cause remains under investigation.

"We're assuming speed," Czaplicki said.

There was no indication alcohol was a factor in the crash, he said.

Geddes police expect to release more information later Tuesday.
